How to light a DCS grill safely comes down to one rule: open the hood first, so gas can never collect under a closed lid. Then check the gas supply, push in and turn one burner knob to High, hold it while the igniter clicks until the flame appears, and light the other burners from it or one at a time. If nothing lights within a few seconds, turn the knob off, leave the hood open and wait about five minutes before trying again, so any gas disperses.
What should you check before lighting a DCS grill?
Open the hood fully. Lighting with the lid closed lets gas build up in the firebox, and the resulting flash can be violent. Confirm every control knob is off. On a propane model, check that the cylinder has gas and the hose is not kinked or cracked. On a natural gas model, check that the shutoff valve to the grill is open. Look for spiders and debris around the burner tubes, which are a known cause of poor lighting, and make sure the burners and caps sit in place.
If you ever smell gas before lighting, do not light anything. Turn off the gas supply, move away and fix the leak first. Our guide to DCS gas smell safety steps explains what to do, and the burner cleaning guide covers the debris check.
How do you light the burners step by step?
Open the gas supply slowly. This matters on a propane grill: opening the cylinder valve quickly can trip the regulator into a reduced-flow safety state, and the grill will then burn weakly. Open it a little at a time. Then push in one burner knob and turn it to the High setting. The igniter clicks while you hold it, and the burner should catch within a few seconds. Release once it is burning steadily, then repeat for the next burner, or let the flame cross over to its neighbor if your model does that.
Light the burners you need for the cook. Turn the knob to adjust the flame once it is lit. Do not lean over the grill while lighting, and keep loose sleeves and hair away from the firebox. If your grill has a rotisserie, the rear infrared burner has its own igniter and valve, as our guide to DCS grill rotisserie setup explains.

What if the igniter does not work?
You can light most gas grills by hand. With the hood open and the gas turned on, hold a long match or a long-reach lighter near the burner, then turn the knob to High. Never hold your face over the burner, and if the flame does not catch in a couple of seconds, turn the knob off and wait five minutes before trying again. If a burner lights with a match but not with the igniter, the burner and gas are fine, and the problem is the spark: a dead battery, a damp or carboned electrode or a drifted gap.
The reverse is also useful. If you see a healthy spark and no flame, the issue is the gas supply or a blocked port. Our guide to DCS grill igniter troubleshooting sorts the two cases, and the cleaning guide helps with blocked ports. If the flame lights then fades, see DCS grill low heat.
How long should you preheat?
Preheat with the hood closed for roughly ten to fifteen minutes, until the grill reaches the temperature the recipe calls for. A grill that has been preheated sears properly, and the grates are hot enough to release food. DCS grills reach high temperatures, so keep an eye on them, and do not leave a preheating grill unattended. Burn off residue on the grates at high heat for a few minutes, then brush them clean before you put food on.
During the cook, keep the hood closed as much as possible and use burners in zones: high on one side for searing and low on the other for finishing. Most flare-ups come from grease, so keep the drip tray clean, as our guide on DCS grill flare-ups explains.
How do you shut the grill down safely?
Turn every burner knob to off, then close the gas at its source: the cylinder valve on propane or the shutoff valve on natural gas. Doing it in that order burns off the gas left in the line instead of trapping it. Let the grill cool before you cover it, and clean the grates while they are still warm. On a propane grill, close the cylinder valve every time, because a slow leak in a hose or fitting will not be noticed until the next cook.
If anything about lighting or shutting down has become difficult or unpredictable, book a diagnosis with DCS grill repair, rather than working around a fault.
